Tim Radford, who served on the UK committee of the UN International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction, reviews the book 'The Million Death Quake' by Roger Musson, head of seismic hazard for the British Geological Survey. In the book one of the world's leading seismologists looks at the dangers of megaquakes, and explains where they'll next strike, why they're becoming more lethal, and what science and engineering are doing to save lives. The review highlights the preparedness and shortcomings of Japan before the Tohuku earthquake of March 2011; and gives a short overview of the disaster risk reduction efforts of Chile and Haiti.
