Kashmir’s unfinished earthquake story: Why scientists are warning of a major seismic threat

Two peer-reviewed scientific studies published in 2026 have renewed warnings that Kashmir remains one of the most vulnerable earthquake regions in South Asia. Their message is not that a major earthquake is imminent, nor that scientists know when one will occur.

The authors describe Kashmir as part of a significant “seismic gap” — a segment of the Himalayan arc where strain appears to have accumulated over long periods without being fully released through major earthquakes.
