Japan's 1st 'subsequent earthquake advisory' a reminder to prepare for disasters

The magnitude 7.5 (provisional) quake occurred in the anticipated epicenter area along the Japan Trench and Chishima Trench, where megaquakes are expected. This warning is issued for earthquakes with a magnitude of 7 or greater, and is the first since the system's implementation in 2022. It covers 182 municipalities across seven prefectures, urging residents to prepare for evacuation and necessary precautions over the next week while continuing socioeconomic activities.

The aim is to raise awareness of potential subsequent earthquakes. Globally, after an earthquake of about magnitude 7-plus, a magnitude-8 or greater quake follows in roughly one out of every 100 cases. The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake was preceded by a magnitude 7 quake two days earlier.

A University of Tokyo survey found that less than 10% of people checked evacuation routes or communication methods with family, and only 20% checked their water and food supply stockpile.

Many may have been unaware of the subsequent earthquake advisory system itself. The government should carefully explain its significance and the necessary disaster response measures. It is also important to strengthen monitoring to prevent the spread of misinformation.
