For Fijian students, annual tsunami drills are just another part of their school life

The annual tsunami drills in Fiji act as a reminder of designated safe areas to communities and give an opportunity to see the process in action.

Schools are also included and assessed during drills, like Sacred Heart Cathedral College in Suva, and principal Praveen Chand was pleased with her students’ response.

“We can see that all the drills and the talk that we’ve been giving them on the preparedness, you can see that when it comes to assembling, counting heads and then taking off,” said Ms Chand.

The national disaster management office (NDMO) visited the school to make sure procedures were in place and everything was ready to go in the event of a natural disaster.
