Dominica Red Cross launches mobile apps for hazard and first aid

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement is celebrating and reaffirming the relevance of its fundamental principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.

Each year on May 08th, 189 national societies which currently exist across the globe, observe this day in honor of the founder of the Red Cross movement, Henry Dunant.

In commemoration of this day, the Dominica Red Cross has officially launched two apps for iOS and Android: a Multi-hazard App and a First Aid app.

“These are available for smart phones and can be downloaded free of charge. They are means of sharing knowledge about the hazards which commonly affect Dominica and what actions can be taken to prepare for and respond.

The apps also includes tools like a flashlight, strobe light and alarm. Emergency messages can also be sent out to friends and family post disaster.

According to Director of Dominica Red Cross, Kathleen Pinard-Bryne, “It is also a means of testing your knowledge about the hazards which affect us and if you don’t have that knowledge, it provides the information so it is a training tool as well.”

She says the First Aid app, though it does not replace a certified First Aid course, provides information on injuries and illnesses and what response should be taken during these events.

Byrne is confident that the apps will significantly improve First Aid response.

She says, “Not everyone has been through a formal First Aid course or disaster risk management training. This provides a lot of information in summary form. If something happens while in the office or out in the field and you’re not sure what assistance to provide, you have a quick means of checking for the right First Aid steps. It’s going to be very useful.”

These apps were developed by the American Red Cross Society and customised to suit Caribbean countries.

According to the Director, proper first response means the difference between life and death.

“Very often when there is an accident, bystanders will just look on without providing assistance. If you are trained and know what to do, that First Aid is invaluable in ensuring that the right treatment is provided,” she believes.
