Natural Resources Canada and BGC Engineering, in Vancouver, Canada, have collaborated to create a database of debris flow impacts from events around the world that were damaging but not devastatingly extreme. The database of 68 case studies has been used to develop a building vulnerability model that uses an "intensity index". Additional case studies for contribution to the database are being sought.
An accompanying paper, entitled "Vulnerability of buildings to debris flow impact", has been published in the Journal of the International Society for the Prevention and Mitigation of Natural Hazards.
This work is one of the efforts in the development of methods to estimate losses from natural hazards and to inform risk reduction strategies.
