The Yearbook of International Disaster Law (YIDL) provides academics and practitioners research on legal and institutional issues relevant to all forms of natural, biological, technological and human-made hazards, including rapid and slow onset disasters and the effects of climate change. The Yearbook offers a forum for innovative research contributing to international legal and policy debates on the prevention, mitigation, response and recovery from disasters. The YIDL is a peer-reviewed journal published by Brill and is available in printed and on-line form. The Yearbook includes both a "Thematic" section and a "General" section. The Editors welcome submissions of abstracts for both sections on the basis of the selection process detailed below.
Thematic section
For the seventh Issue of the Yearbook of International Disaster Law, the thematic focus will be "Armed Conflicts, Armed Forces and Disasters". Authors are encouraged to submit abstracts exploring this topic in its multifaceted aspects. This provides an opportunity for analysis on international legal implications related to the relationship between disasters and armed conflicts as well as the role of armed forces in disaster scenarios. Papers on the following topics are particularly welcomed: the relationship between IDL instruments and international humanitarian law (IHL); humanitarian principles in IHL and IDL; the legal framework addressing the role of organised armed groups in disaster settings; legal and policy issues raised by the use of military assets in disasters; management of epidemics and armed conflicts; case-studies on legal-institutional challenges in managing disasters during armed conflicts; Regional integration mechanism on disaster management, armed conflicts and/or the role of armed forces; the notion of mixed (or complex) emergencies and its link to IDL.
General section
Abstracts for potential papers related to the "General Section" are also welcomed. Papers in this section could address any legal issue relevant to international disaster law, implications for international law arising from disaster scenarios, recent practice in this area (e.g. international documents; case-law) or national analysis related to disaster law.
Submission procedure
Abstracts for potential papers to be published in the 'Thematic' and 'General' sections should be sent by 15th February 2024 to [email protected]. Abstracts should be between 300 and 500 words. Authors are kindly requested to attach a short curriculum vitae to their e-mail. The selection process of submitted abstracts will be coordinated by the Editors of the YIDL and results will be communicated to applicants by the of February 2024. Full manuscripts (max. 10.000 words, footnotes included) are due by 1st July 2024. Papers will be subjected to a double-blind peer review process managed by the YIDL, before being finally accepted for publication.
