Building blocks - Helen Clark
In her article for the Financial Times, Helen Clark, administrator of the UN Development Programme and former prime minister of New Zealand, praises Haiti's efforts to build back a more resilient country with 'urban ingenuity.' Talking about a UNDP and Haiti government initiative which has registered around 20,000 people, with 5,000 are being trained in disaster-resilient homebuilding techniques, she notes that "Haitian families and communities have been at the forefront of efforts to build more resilient cities" through the prioritization of needs, such as the establishment of disaster-resilient infrastructure. UNDP calls for a comprehensive national strategy that adheres to agreed urban plans and standards and announces the launch of the first housing policy in Haitian history this year.
