Augmented reality to help smartphone users get to safety in Japan tsunami evacuation drill

The municipal government is set to conduct a disaster drill on March 3 using technology that overlays evacuation routes onto the view from a smartphone camera, based on the user's location.

The tsunami evacuation drill, to be conducted around Aeon Mall Iwaki Onahama near the Pacific coast, is said to be the first of its kind in Japan incorporating technology from the metaverse.

When the app is activated, the current surroundings are displayed, and large arrows indicating evacuation routes are shown on the sidewalk. Additionally, messages such as "A tsunami is coming! Please evacuate quickly!" will appear on the screen.

Yusuke Oishi, a professor at Kyushu University involved in the app's development, told the Mainichi Shimbun, "We want to leverage feedback from real-world use (of the app) to identify challenges and apply that information to future development."
