Algeria seeks new approach to natural disasters

Magharebia reports that there is an urgent need for the Algerian government to develop a national strategy for managing major risks. One of the major steps to be taken is to prevent people from building on the wadi beds and flood plains.

"People built on the riverbanks, and we lack the human resources to prevent such building. The water police are overstretched, and they can barely manage to control the unregulated digging of wells or the use of waste water for irrigation. A global solution is needed," declared Abdelmalek Sella, Water Resources Minister.
