The Africa Working Group provides coordination and technical support to AUC, RECs, Member States and partners for the implementation of the Africa Regional Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction and its Programme of Action, in line with HFA. The AWG Core Group normally meets on a biannual basis while the AWG Extended Group meets annually, mainly in run up to or back-to-back with continental meetings or platforms.

Objectives and Outputs of the Meeting

The 5th Session of the AWG meeting was an extended one, being held in run-up to the Fifth Africa Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (Abuja, Nigeria, 5 – 8 May 2014) where the Africa Position on HFA-2 was adopted through a Ministerial Declaration. The AWG was expected to work as the Advisory/Steering Committee for the Platform and aimed to:

  1. Refine and fine-tune the draft Africa Position on HFA-2, developed through a consultative process.
  2. Review DRR progress in Africa since the last AWG meeting (Johannesburg, 18-19 April 2013)
  3. Update on action points as identified in the last meeting

Meeting result expectations:

  1. Final draft of the Africa Position on HFA-2 (to be presented to AfRP for consultation)
  2. Other draft documents, as deemed necessary for the Africa Regional Platform
  3. Agreed programme for the AfRP
  4. Future partner engagement process
