According to the Sarisita Foundation, disabled persons are more vulnerable to disasters due to their lack of mobility, poor health and most of them live in poverty. Disabled like blind, deaf, paralysed people, physically challenged and mentally retarded and slow learner children may not be able to escape and free from danger. Yet, they are often ignored or excluded at all levels of disasters preparedness. In most developing and poor countries disabled and children are not in schools and disabled youth and adults are excluded from any awareness and preparedness training programmes for disaster reduction.

There are approximately 70 million persons with disabilities in India according to the Foundation which has prepared and built capacity amongst 7500 disabled by organizing 90 workshops and preparedness modules in disaster prone states of India, over the past 10 years.

This workshop is a continuation of the Foundation's mission.
