Training on geospatial tools for climate/disaster risk sensitive comprehensive land use plans (CLUPs)
Local government planners from municipalities hardest hit by Typhoon Pablo such as New Bataan in Compostela Valley and Boston in Davao Oriental will come together in Davao to participate in the “Training on Geospatial Tools for Climate/Disaster Risk Sensitive Comprehensive Land Use Plans (CLUPs)”, hosted by the Project Climate Twin Phoenix in collaboration with the University of the Philippines-Mindanao College of Science and Mathematics, Department of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science. The goal of the training is to provide local government units with essential knowledge and application skills in geospatial tools for planning and management of their natural resources and in mainstreaming climate change in the formulation of their CLUP.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) have been recognized as invaluable tools in coming up with climate-sensitive CLUP to ensure that lands where houses will be constructed or rebuilt are safe from geohazards and that new or rebuilt communities are liveable and accessible to livelihood and basic services and facilities. With Typhoon Pablo changing the physical landscape of some of the target municipalities, it is necessary that new land use plans are prepared, along with thematic maps that will show new location of settlements and infrastructures identified as safe zones. These technologies are already being incorporated in multi-hazard mapping and are being used to integrate climate and disaster risks into land use plans.
GIS specialists and experts from related fields will conduct the extensive two-week training. They will introduce the participants to the concepts of geospatial technologies and their use in the formulation of climate/disaster risk sensitive CLUPs as wells as the techniques of collecting and validating geospatial data using said tools. Hands-on laboratory exercises will complement the lectures and presentations.
The training is hosted by Project Climate Twin Phoenix. It is a project implemented by the CCC and with support and technical assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Australian Government, to put in place a long term capacity development programme for cities and municipalities, addressing disaster risks from climate change and other related natural hazards.
