ISNET/ISA workshop on space applications for disaster risk reduction and management
Whereas conventional means have their peculiar significance, and can be applied to problem-solving and decision-making at the level of a smaller geographical area, space technology is best known for its wider coverage and system efficiency. Satellite-enabled technologies hold significant potential to meet national needs in developing countries, including the OIC. In the context of Disaster Risk Reduction, earth observation by Satellite Remote Sensing (SRS), Satellite Communication (SatCom), and Satellite Navigation (SatNav) together with GIS could provide invaluable services. Through the use of information that satellites could provide to the disaster management authorities in the form of real-time satellite imagery, the problem of disaster hazard assessment, management and mitigation could be addressed. With the development of early warning systems, it could also provide policy and decision-makers warning in case of extreme weather events.
The workshop will be an excellent opportunity for the participants to meet experts and colleagues as to exchange best and less good experience with an international group of professionals with a shared interest in geospatial technology and disaster risk reduction and management.
Programme
The two-week workshop will include the use of various tools and methods. It would feature lectures and with special emphasis on hands-on training exercises using different space technologies and techniques targeting specific hazard areas.
