Objectives
The overall objective of this training course is to make the participants aware of the potential of space technology for various phases of flood risk management. The participants will be exposed to, relevant remote sensing, GIS and communication technologies, so as to get an in depth understanding how these technologies can be used in an operational scenario. With the training received it is expected that the participant will have adequate skills to apply the knowledge acquired in ones own country to support organization / managers involved in flood risk management.

Course structure
The course is modular in structure and provides a balanced treatment of theory, application and practical experience as follows:

Module I (1st Week) Basics of Remote sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) and also concepts of Flooding problems will be covered.

Module II (2nd week) Concepts on Disaster Management, planning and operational use of communication facilities in disasters like floods will be covered.

Module III (3rd & 4th week) Application of Earth Observation technology for Flood studies such as Flood risk assessment, zoning and damage assessment. In addition to this, operational flood information generation and dissemination will also be covered. The advantages and constraints of satellite communication technique to select appropriate systems in supporting flood disaster management will also be discussed.
