International day for disaster reduction - CIEDM workshop and Arcadia EcoHome tour

In response to International Strategy for Disaster Reduction's campaign on world disaster reduction and as a registered participant in the Great California ShakeOut, CIEDM as an environmental institution will hold the workshop on Sunday 10 October 2010 to promote public awareness of the UN's International Day for Disaster Reduction on 13 October 2010 and the Shakeout on 21 October 2010.

The subject of disaster awareness and preparedness will be introduced in the context of climate changes and consequences by Dr. Edward Huang 黄铁屿 along with other subjects related to the special day when CIEDM serves as a local partner to participate in the following global and national activities:

  • the 1010global.org's A Global Day of Doing;
  • 350.org's tcktcktck 10/10/10 Global Work Party;
  • Victory Garden Foundation's 10.10.10 Victory Garden Challenge;
  • the American Geological Institute's Earth Science Week celebration starting 10-10 to 10-16.

Dr. Edward Huang 黄铁屿, a certified green building professional, will make a presentation on the nature and missions of ISDR, 350.org, VGF & AGI and their common goals, and remind the participants the passing World Habitat Day on October 4 & the coming National Weatherization Day on October 30.

He will then lead a tour of Arcadia EcoHome, a collection of the Eco-Home Network and a Build It Green certified green building, and its yard, a VGF registered Victory Garden and a NWF certified Wildlife Habitat. Seismic enforced, environmental friendly & energy efficient features incorporated in the property will be introduced in the tour, and the participants will be encouraged to take disaster reduction & weatherization measures in their own properties before or on October 21 & 30, respectively.

The workshop will take place at 2:00-4:00 pm and up to 25 guests and friends of CIEDM & GreenNet Group will be invited to participate. It is a CIEDM's continuous effort to promote a sustainable lifestyle and a sustainable community adaptive to the climate change.
