Flood risk management and urban resilience

Background

In the context of rapid demographic growth, urbanization and climate changes, urban flooding poses a serious and growing development challenge, particularly for the residents of the rapidly expanding towns and cities in Asia. To help confront the escalating urban vulnerability challenges faced by National and Local Governments, the World Bank has recently published a new flagship report titled Cities and Flooding: A Guide to Integrated Flood Risk Management, as part of its global commitment to Disaster Risk Reduction.

Under the partnership between the Government of Republic of Korea and the World Bank, Flood Risk Management and Urban Resilience in the South East Asia (PHASE I) program is currently being implemented and as a part of the key activities, the Flood Risk Management and Urban Resilience workshop in Jakarta will be held. The workshop will be designed to encourage and facilitate knowledge transfer and make progress on creating a multi-stakeholder framework for collaboration for the development of case studies in the cities. Throughout a 2-day workshop, we will refer to our recently launched product "Cities and Flooding: A Guide to Integrated Urban Flood Risk Management for the 21st Century" as a tool and key policy, technical messages and case studies presented by representatives of each country, development partner organizations and World Bank for our discussions
