Competition for students on international day for disaster reduction
National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), New Delhi, India, constituted under the Disaster Management Act 2005, is an apex National Institute of Government of India with the nodal responsibilities for human resource development, capacity building, training, research, documentation, public awareness and policy advocacy in disaster management.
The United Nations’ (UN) International Day for Disaster Reduction is observed on the second Wednesday of October to raise the awareness about disaster risk reduction. It also encourages people and governments to participate in building more resilient communities and nations.
NIDM will be observing the Day for Disaster Reduction on 12th October 2011. This day offers an opportunity to focus national attention on this important issue and to create awareness about disasters and their management.
To observe the day, NIDM will be organizing “Students March” for college students in Delhi. Further, to enhance awareness among the school students and to sensitize them towards disasters and their management, following activities will be organized.
Activities for schools:
There will be three competitions on the theme ‘Safety from disasters’ for the school students. Students in the age group of 13-17 years can participate in these competitions. The different categories of the competitions are:
1. Painting [Drawing sheet with size 15”x 20”]
2. Poster [Drawing sheet with size 15”x 20”]
3. Slogan Writing – [Hindi & English]
How to participate:
Individual competitions for each level of the above categories will be arranged at the school level by the school authorities through a transparent selection process. Only school nominated students will be allowed to participate in the competitions. Based on the internal competitions, respective schools should shortlist/select 3 best entries in each category and intimate about the nominated entries along with the paintings, posters and slogans.
School should use the given Format (Nomination Form) for nominating the entries. The nominated entries of Paintings, Posters and Slogans should have proper label fixed at the back. The label must be legible and should contain the following basic information and preferably it should have the official seal and signature of the head/principal of the school:

All the top three selected entries of each of the competitions may be communicated to NIDM along with the material under the signature of the Head of the Institution by 30th September 2011. Panel of Judges will evaluate the entries for 1st, 2nd and 3rd position from all the entries received in each category. Out of the received entries, First prize of Rs. 20,000, Second of Rs. 15,000, Third of Rs. 10,000 and five consolation prizes of Rs. 1,000 each along with certificates will be awarded to the winners.
