Global climate action: International day for disaster reduction 2010
Background
The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) supports the global call of UNISDR in building resilient town and cities worldwide by pursuing disaster risk reduction. IIRR is a 50 year old non-government organization that has been promoting participatory approaches and capacity building to uplift the lives of the rural poor.
For the past 5 decades, the institute was able to develop many approaches to protect and conserve our natural resources where community participation is the center of gravity. In 2006, IIRR started to work on Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) which puts the community at the center of gravity in the whole Disaster Risk Reduction process which includes disaster risk assessment and analysis as well as DRR action planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation and policy advocacy. CMDRR also touches on the impacts of climate change which exacerbates hazard or disaster events. Through CMDRR, IIRR promotes and pushes for approaches that helps mitigate impacts of climate change as well as build adaptation capacities of the communities that are affected by climate change. CMDRR also puts the community in the center of gravity in the whole process of risk reduction.
