Regional seminar, special report on managing the risks of extreme events and disasters to advance climate change adaptation (SREX)

Asian Disaster Preparedness Center is organizing a regional preparatory meeting for the upcoming SREX authors meeting in Hanoi in March 2010. The meeting, which is co-hosted by the Working Group II of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) with financial support from the Government of Norway, will take place from 7-8 January 2010 at Hotel Plaza Athenee, Bangkok Thailand.

Working Group II assesses the scientific, technical, environmental, economic and social aspects of the vulnerability (sensitivity and adaptability) to climate change of, and the negative and positive consequences for, ecological systems, socio-economic sectors and human health, with an emphasis on regional sectoral and cross-sectoral issues.

The major themes of the meeting will be:

-Brief overview of the IPCC process
-Discourses and framings of climate change
-Climate change impact and adaptation study for Bangkok metropolitan region
-Synergies between disaster risk reduction and adaptation
-Managing extremes: the role of thresholds and limits
-Assessing the literatures: key issues in the SREX (what role for gray literature, diverse languages, subjective and qualitative research etc.)
-Disaster risk management and climate change adaptation in the Asian context
-Presentation of case study: social-ecological resilience to coastal disasters- the case of Vietnam
-Presentation of case study- the case of Bangladesh, Philippines and Indonesia
-Presentation of case study: adaptation and disaster risk reduction- experiences from the Himalayas
-Identifying synergies to advance human security.
