Position Overview
The Joint Centre for Disaster Research is seeking to appoint a Public Education Advisor for a fixed-term of three years to advise on best practice in community-based education; build capacity through promoting understanding of social research in emergency management; and to support disaster research around school and community-based public education.
A postgraduate qualification in education and/or emergency management or an allied field is required. Excellent communication skills, ability to work as a member of a team and to maintain relationships with external agencies while managing multiple tasks is essential.
The position is based on the Wellington campus. Travel to Albany and Palmerston North campuses and various NZ locations will be required from time-to-time.
Job Description
Purpose statement:
To coordinate and facilitate research activities between, and with, emergency management (EM) and research personnel in the area of EM; advise EM and research personnel of professional development opportunities; to promote, participate in, and keep up-to-date in resilience-building activities at Massey University, GNS Science, local EM agencies and government departments; and contribute to ‘research to practice’ initiatives and activities.
Key accountability areas:
The appointee will be accountable to the head of school through the director of the joint centre for disaster research for all matters relating to the public education advisory position.
Specific accountabilities include:
1. Assist emergency management and research personnel in the implementation and conduct of research activity by developing best practice guidelines and conducting training workshops.
2. Coordinate and facilitate resilience building activity in emergency management public education best practice by developing training modules.
3. Advise emergency management and research personnel of local and international educational development opportunities.
4. Contribute to meeting the research-administration needs of the joint centre for disaster research, as directed by the director.
5. Conduct other reasonable duties as specified by the director of the joint centre for disaster research.
Person Specification
Qualifications:
- Masters degree in education and/or emergency management, or an allied field.
- Experience professional practice in education.
- Research experience in emergency management and/or education.
- Teaching experience is preferred.
Specific research and/or practical experience in the following is desirable:
- Hazards education for children and the wider community;
- Coordination and teaching of educational programmes;
- Evaluation of education programmes; and
- Ability to collect and collate survey data.
Attributes and skills:
- Excellent interpersonal skills and collegiality.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Desire to extend own knowledge in the area of emergency management.
