Global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration
This is the final text of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, which was finalized on 13 July 2018. This is the first time that Member States of the United Nations have come together to negotiate an agreement covering all dimensions of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive manner. The agreement will be formally adopted by Member States at the Intergovernmental Conference to Adopt the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, which will be held in Marrakesh, Morocco, on 10 and 11 December 2018.
This Global Compact outlines the shared vision, principles, 23 separate objectives, commitments for implementation, and processes for follow-up and review, to improve cooperation in international migration. In particular, Objective 2 calls for Member States to "Minimize the adverse drivers and structural factors that compel people to leave their country of origin," which includes a specific section on migration driven by natural disasters, the adverse effects of climate change, and environmental degradation.
