2020 Major Floods in China
Southern China has been experiencing record floods since June 2020, which lead to heavy economic and human life losses. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) aboard satellites can not only penetrate cloud cover but also image day and night, and hence is the choice of sensor for flood mapping.
Taking full advantage of Sentinel-1A and 1B satellites of the European Space Agency (ESA), this animation showcase the cost-effective mapping of flood extent over the Poyang Lake area between 14 June and 14 July 2020, updated once every 6 days.
