El Niño in Ethiopia: programme observations on the impact of the Ethiopia drought and recommendations for action
This paper presents an overview of the impact of the massive drought and food insecurity crisis in Ethiopia, where failed rains and droughts have been worsened by the 2015 El Niño. It draws from Oxfam's water, sanitation and hygiene promotion and emergency food security programme response in Somali, Afar and Oromia regions. It aims to highlight the critical issues people are facing in terms of access to water, food and livelihoods support. It also makes recommendations to donor governments, the UN, the Government of Ethiopia and implementing agencies on how to address these immediate needs and support communities to become more resilient and reduce their vulnerability to weather events in the future.
