Building better to save lives

The Australian news agency, Daily Telegraph reports on structural safety as the devastating scenes from Padang provide yet another tragic reminder of the urgent need to replace or upgrade vulnerable buildings.

"The United Nations and NGOs can produce all these documents to highlight the problem but it's a difficult challenge to make people aware of the risk - and find ways of mitigating it," said Professor Paul Grundy, specializing in disaster risk reduction at the Monash University in Melbourne.
