Philippines: Makati draws up action plan for climate change, disaster resiliency

Makati City -- Local officials of the 33 barangays in the city recently participated in an action planning workshop on the Climate and Disaster Resilience Initiative (CDRI) organized by the city government in partnership with the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies (GSGES) of Kyoto University in Japan.
In an article posted on Makati's website, Mayor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay Jr. lauded the participants for recognizing their important role in attaining a "climate and disaster resilient Makati" and urged them to focus on coming up with concrete and doable action plans for their respective barangays.
“We are giving much emphasis on building resilience at the grassroots level. We want our people to be able to help themselves, to be more self-reliant and less dependent on the government. We want them to learn to take responsibility for the safety of their families, of their homes, and of their communities,” Binay said.
Binay also thanked the representatives of the city’s partner-institution for sharing their expertise on the CDRI, a methodology used to assess a community’s climate and disaster resilience through five dimensions: natural, physical, social, economical, and institutional.
Prof. Yukiko Takeuchi and Yuki Matsuoka from GSGES, Kyoto University briefed the participants on the guide for the implementation of the Hyogo Framework of Action by local stakeholders, which identifies 20 main tasks to be used as guides for comprehensive actions on disaster reduction.
The institution’s analysis of the results of the CDRI survey and profiling of all 33 barangays in the city conducted last December was also presented to the participants.
Other sectors and agencies were also represented at the workshop, including Philippine National Red Cross-Makati, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Maynilad Water Services Inc., Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers-Makati, Mapua Makati and DILG-Makati.
“This workshop specifically targeting the barangays will, I am sure, strengthen our collective capability to take proactive measures that will effectively reduce the risks posed by disasters to make every community more resilient,” said Binay.
