The 2011 flood event in the Mekong Delta: Preparedness, response, damage and recovery of private households and small businesses

This publication, presents data from Can Tho city on the Vietnamese side of the Mekong Delta. Its findings expose losses and damages to households and businesses following the 2011 floods. While early warning systems are critical to inform residents in time and allow them to prepare and protect their assets, the study found that 30 per cent of the respondents did not receive flood warning before the disaster.

Further findings demonstrated that losses caused by the disruption of production processes were often significantly higher than damage. Omitting this loss category results in incomplete risk assessments, underestimating the true cost of floods, affecting in turn proposals for flood management.
