Spain: Surveillance and control of heatwave effects 2022 Madrid
The Plan outlines the establishment of a heat-related Surveillance and Information System for the Community of Madrid, identifying temperature thresholds associated with increased health risks. Drawing on scientific evidence, a maximum threshold of 36.5 °C is defined, beyond which mortality rises significantly and health protection measures are activated. During the summer period (1 June-15 September), daily heat risk and alert levels are communicated to the public, health and social care professionals, and institutions responsible for vulnerable populations. The Plan also includes continuous monitoring of morbidity and mortality to compare observed outcomes with expected patterns, enabling early detection of abnormal health impacts and timely intervention.
