Communication on integrated wildfire risk management
The European Commission’s Communication on integrated wildfire risk managementsets out a comprehensive framework to address wildfire risk through a coordinated, multi-level approach aligned with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. The summer of 2025 underscored the growing threat of wildfires in Europe and the urgent need to act. Despite increasing prevention and preparedness efforts at both national and European Union (EU) level, the cumulative burnt area in the EU was bigger than ever registered before: it exceeded 1 million hectares, an area bigger than Cyprus.
The communication concludes that resilience requires strengthening the disaster risk management cycle as a whole: prevention, preparedness, response, and post-fire recovery. All these steps need to be linked and addressed in a holistic way. The Commission is ready to prioritise funding under the new MFF to reduce wildfire risk, but success depends on action at national and local level.
