An integrated assessment of climate change impacts and implications on Bonaire

This study aimed to explore the socio-economic impacts of climate change on Bonaire. First, the researchers analysed the biophysical effects of climate change under different climate scenarios in 2050, namely coral reef degradation and inundation. This information was subsequently applied to determine socio-economic impacts associated with climate change, such as damage to the built environment and tangible cultural heritage, as well as to economic development as a consequence of a reduction in tourism

The results suggest that direct action is needed to protect the island of Bonaire and its inhabitants against the implications of climate change. In the absence of timely planning and implementation of adaptation measures, the impacts of climate change may have serious implications for inhabitants’ lifestyle and wellbeing.
