Infrastructure for small island developing States: The role of infrastructure in enabling sustainable, resilient and inclusive development in SIDS
This report highlights some of infrastructure solutions for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to face compound challenges better. It calls for a holistic understanding of infrastructure systems, and argues for an urgent need to make evidence-based decisions. With limited resources and mounting needs, it is crucial that investment in infrastructure systems yields long-term development gains for all.
Find here some of the specific infrastructure opportunities to innovatively maximize SIDS’ resources in order to tackle their challenges that are exposed in table 1:
- Transport: Efficient inter-island shipping services can enable the pooling of resources among islands to yield economies of scale
- Energy: Offshore wind farms and rooftop installation of solar panels can reduce land competition
- Digital communications: Submarine fibre-optic cables can lower wholesale costs and improve service delivery
