Farming, flooding and the future
This document is the summary of the National Farmer's Union flooding manifesto destined to influence the United Kingdom government's attitude and priorities on flood management and agricultural land. It recognises that farming has a key role to play in flood management. Where farmers provide a service in mitigating flood risk to help protect others, this must be a coherent, planned component of total catchment management, for which farmers must be fairly compensated.
The publication recommends the following, among others:
- long-term planning for flood and coastal risk management;
- improved modelling for flood risk;
- sufficient and transparent funding.
