Protecting mental health from extreme heat: Recommendations for policy and action
This study’s objective is to assess the extent to which mental health considerations are incorporated into heat action plans and to explore how governments, organizations, and communities are addressing the mental health impacts of extreme heat. To better understand this gap, the study reviews 143 heat action plans and examines practical approaches being implemented in different contexts to protect mental health during periods of extreme heat.
The report recommends that national, regional and local policy makers working on heat action plans and mental health action plans:
- Recognise the negative impacts of heat on mental health.
- Highlight the heightened risk faced by people living with mental health conditions during extreme heat, particularly those with severe mental health conditions.
- Monitor the impacts of extreme heat on mental health to inform early-warning and heat-adaptation responses.
- Ensure tailored and evidence-informed actions are implemented to protect and promote mental health during extreme heat.
