Continental drying: A threat to our common future
This report outlines the accelerating decline in global freshwater availability, described as continental drying, and presents new evidence on where, why, and how this trend is unfolding. Drawing on satellite observations, economic data, and land‑use analysis, it identifies global hotspots, quantifies the social, economic, and environmental impacts, and explains the cascading risks for food systems, livelihoods, and ecosystems.
The report recommends a three‑pronged strategy centred on managing demand, augmenting supply, and improving allocation to address the crisis and reduce future disaster risk. It stresses the need for integrated water governance, investment in resilient infrastructure, and policies that support efficient water use across agriculture, industry, and households. Complementary actions—such as reducing trade barriers, expanding access to markets and finance, and strengthening education and skills—are presented as essential to safeguarding jobs and livelihoods in a drying world.
