Assessment of flood hazard awareness, risk, warning system, preparedness measures and ability to utilize information to counter the hazard effects in selected states in the Niger Delta, Nigeria
The study is to assess flood hazard awareness, risk, warning system, preparedness measures and ability to utilize information to counter the hazard effects in selected states in the Niger Delta, Nigeria. The study utilized Landsat OLI/TIRS of 30m resolution of 2020 and Arc GIS 10.5 to classify the study area into different flood vulnerability levels. The population of the area as projected to 2019 using NPC growth rate of 2.9% and 3.4% arrived at 226,393 while the sample size as calculated with Taro Yamane formula is 399.
The study recommends proactive measures to help reduce further impacts such as repair/construction of drainages, free natural diversion channels to ease water flow and that the Federal Government of Nigeria alongside disaster management agencies and non-governmental organizations should improve capacities of the communities residents through training, early warning signals, disaster preparedness, disaster skills, provision of financial and health assistance to encourage resilient culture of the people
