Climate risk and adaptation country profile: Vulnerability, risk reduction, and adaptation to climate change: Lao P.D.R.
This paper profiles the vulnerability, risk reduction, and adaptation to climate change of Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR). According to the National Adaptation Program of Action finalized in 2009 by the Government of Lao PDR, main actions should focus on supporting capacity building and climate change mainstreaming into the local, provincial, and national planning and decision making process.
The paper identifies the following actions as priorities in response to current and projected climate variability and change:
- Agriculture and forestry to promote secondary professions in order to improve the livelihoods of farmers affected by natural disaster induced by climate change amoung others;
- Water sector to study, design, and build multi-use reservoirs in drought-prone areas amoung others;
- Health to research and increase prevention of epidemics and potential increase of vector-borne diseases.
