Mission
The Commonwealth of Kentucky officially created Kenton County on January 29, 1840. Named after Simon Kenton, an early pioneer and explorer.
Kenton County is located in Northern Kentucky and is home to nearly 170,000 residents, making it the third most populous county in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Kenton County consists of nineteen cities and several areas of unincorporated county land. It is unique in that it has two county seats- one in the City of Covington and one in the City of Independence.
The City of Independence was established as the county seat since it was the center of the county. Due to the rural location and distance from the major population in Covington, officials decided to recognize two county seats- one in the City of Independence and one in the City of Covington, which still continues today.
Kenton County undertakes disaster risk reduction activities focused on preparedness, mitigation, public safety, and coordination across local jurisdictions. Through its emergency management and homeland security functions, the county plans for and responds to a range of hazards, including severe storms, flooding along the Ohio River and its tributaries, winter weather, extreme heat and cold, and public health emergencies. Kenton County participates in hazard mitigation planning to identify local vulnerabilities and prioritize actions that reduce long-term risk, such as strengthening infrastructure, improving land-use practices, and enhancing emergency response capacity.
Voluntary Commitments
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
