Days after a strong earthquake shook parts of North India including Jammu and Kashmir, students of the ITI Rajouri, have developed an earthquake alarm model to raise the earliest warning signals for the population during an earthquake.
Geologists blame haphazard constructions in tectonically active zones in mountainous areas. With Jammu and Kashmir being vulnerable to disasters especially earthquake, floods, and soil erosion, experts have called for risk assessment of vulnerable areas.
Experts say that in Srinagar, the largest city in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, the government has made little progress in flood mitigation beyond setting up monitoring control rooms, sounding alerts, and announcing advisories. Continuous encroachments on river embankments, defective dredging, stalled work, and shoddy flood walls have impeded meaningful change.
College students in Kashmir have created a floating structure that will elevate instead of inundate in the result of a flood. The structure would be built next to homes as a safety point for people and their belongings if severe flooding occurs.
In response to the Jammu Kashmir Government lingering over a proposal for a disaster management plan, residents of 10 flood-prone villages have come together to formulate their own plan. Solutions to the flood-related issues were formulated through participatory risk assessment and identification of vulnerable populations in the communities.
Buildings coming up in the City in future will be earthquake resistant as the Srinagar Municipal Corporation would grant building permissions only for those structures which would adhere to the 'safety standards'...
