Mission
District Patiala's disaster risk reduction efforts align with the state of Punjab's plan to mitigate risks from natural and man-made disasters like floods, earthquakes, and fires. These efforts include both structural measures like flood control and non-structural ones such as public awareness campaigns and early warning systems. The district has demonstrated success, notably in reducing stubble burning incidents through awareness and machinery support, and has implemented flood protection measures following past flood events.
Disaster risk management in Patiala is overseen by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), operating under the umbrella of the Punjab State Disaster Management Plan. Initiatives include training programs, such as those organized by the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) in collaboration with Punjabi University, Patiala, which help in preparedness, response, and recovery efforts. The focus is on prevention, preparedness, search and rescue, and community awareness.
Voluntary Commitments
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
