Volcanic activity sparks disaster preparedness planning in Solomon Islands

There’s an estimated 100 people living with a disability on Savo Island in Solomon Islands, and with a high risk of natural disasters, planning is happening now to make sure everyone is included.

It’s been almost 200 years since the last known eruption of the volcano on Savo Island, but recent activity has moved disaster preparedness sharply into focus, particularly for people living with a disability.

“Our thinking is to install some early warning systems on those communities, the 10 communities, and thinking about different disabilities,” Mr Mali said.

“They will depend on a bell or something that they can hear, and other disabilities will also be considered in those early warning systems,” Mr Mali said.
