Philippines: Central Luzon quake provides ‘lessons learned’ for the Big One preparation

The government experience in handling the response on the 6.2 magnitude quake that left destruction in Pampanga will be used as an input for the preparations for the so-called ‘Big One’ that is feared to strike Metro Manila and nearby areas anytime. 

Seismologists said the Big One would be triggered by a movement in the West Valley Fault and is estimated to potentially kill at least 30,000 and leave destruction in Metro Manila.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, concurrent chairman of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), said what the government experienced in the aftermath of the Central Luzon earthquake last month, particularly in the collapse of a four-storey building that housed a supermarket, is an “eye view” of what would happen once a quake of more than 7 in magnitude shakes Metro Manila.

“We have plenty of lessons learned here (Central Luzon quake)… no passable roads, no electricity, no water supply et cetera. These are the things that we should be prepared for,” said Lorenzana.
