Teaching children disaster planning at Te Papa 'improves adult knowledge'

Teaching children how to prepare for disaster helps improve the knowledge of their parents and teachers too, a Te Papa study has found.

Through the Awesome Forces exhibition, children learn why New Zealand experiences natural disasters and how to behave in an emergency, and then are encouraged to take their new-found knowledge home.

MacDonald found the disaster programme "significantly increased student knowledge of disaster preparedness compared to the control group" and improved teacher and parent knowledge and behaviour.
