Tackling climate change: Adapt to changes at local levels but mitigate release of greenhouse gases

R K Pachauri reports for the Economic Times that most surveys of public perceptions and attitudes in the past have seemed to indicate that climate change is something that would really affect economic activities and human well-being only some time in the future. This conclusion has now to be reviewed in the light of new scientific evidence - following up the fourth IPCC report with evidence from the Special Report on Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (Srex).

These impacts in the nature of extreme events and disasters not only have humanitarian significance but economic consequences as well, asserts the author. Estimates of annual losses have ranged since 1980 from a few billion dollars to above $200 billion (in 2010 exchange rates), with the highest value for 2005 (the year of Hurricane Katrina).
