UNESCO to hold regional seminar on alertness against tsunamis

UNESCO and the Indonesian Tsunami Alert Community (Kogami) will be holding a seminar 'Building a Model For Disaster Preparedness' for the Asia-Pacific region to discuss tsunami preparedness.

The seminar, to be held in association with the European Union (EU), the UN International Strategy For Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), Andalas University, and the West Sumatra chapter of the Disaster Alert Journalist Nework, will take place in Padang, 17-18 March 2009. Representatives from six tsunami-prone countries; Indonesia, Maldives, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Malaysia are expected to attend.

According to the Executive Director of Kogami Indonesia Patra Rina Dewi, the regional seminar, 'Building a Model For Disaster Preparedness' will serves as a means in providing regional, national and local public with information on the process and progress in the development of disaster alertness. It will cover the activities of Padang city, West Sumatra which has prepared a system and capacity in overcoming natural [hazard-related] disasters, in particular tsunamis.
