Philippines: Duterte wants durable evacuation centers

Following the onslaught of Tropical Depression “Usman,” President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the construction of durable structures that would serve as evacuation centers.

“But it has to be a durable one, semento (made of cement). But this can only be used for evacuation purposes and to keep the people safe and not to disturb the resumption of the governmental functions that we have, the schooling and everything,” he added.

The President said this was not the first time that the issue was raised. He said classes were disrupted because schools were being used as shelters for those affected by calamities.

“Every typhoon, calamity that would need the evacuation of people, the public schools really suffer. And also it disturbs the system. It causes an aberration in the schooling of children,” he said.
