The potent earthquake and tsunami that devastated northeastern Japan constitute a warning for the Pacific Northwest says Yumei Wang in the Dot Earth blog by Andrew Revkin for the New York Times.

'It’s a stark reminder that there is a lot of work to do to prepare for a nearly identical — and inevitable — disaster. Like many places, Oregon has been busy making its schools greener. I hope residents in districts of the 1,000 schools known to be vulnerable to big earthquakes also work to make them safer, as well.'
