Romanians declare themselves well-informed about how to act during an earthquake, yet concrete preparation measures remain delayed. While 88% state they know how to react, only 44% have discussed and established a family plan for such a situation, and just 40% keep a first-aid kit, according to the latest sociological survey conducted by IRES at the request of UNSAR.

Confidence in home safety also remains high: 76% of Romanians consider their homes resistant to earthquakes—23% rating them as “very resistant” and 53% as “resistant.” These findings highlight the urgent need to translate awareness of earthquake safety into concrete preparedness actions. Furthermore, they bring back into focus the importance of financial protection, given that seismic damage can generate significant financial burdens for homeowners.

In this context, UNSAR is running the “Be #SafeAT-HOME! Every Day” communication campaign throughout October. “The fact that the majority of Romanians consider their homes resistant to earthquakes should not diminish the importance of preparing for such an event. A seismic event can have major consequences on personal safety and the financial stability of affected families. That is why prevention and financial protection must go hand in hand,” stated Alexandru Ciuncan, President & CEO of UNSAR.

In Romania, mandatory home insurance (PAD) provides financial protection, within legal limits, for damages caused to dwellings by earthquakes, natural floods, and landslides. Optional policies offer extended coverage up to the real value of the building and personal belongings, covering damage from natural disasters as well as additional risks, including fires, explosions, storms, falling debris, plumbing or heating system leaks, HVAC failure, and electrical appliance breakdowns.
