The new organization is said to be a "Japanese version of the CDC" in line with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which plays a central role in infectious disease control in the United States. The merger of the NIID and NCGM will result in a special corporation that will conduct everything from epidemiological surveys to clinical research and provide scientific knowledge to the government in the event of a global pandemic of an infectious disease or other situation.
