Nature-based Solutions are solutions inspired by nature to reduce risks of natural hazards while providing environmental, social and economic benefits. UNESCO and partners have developed an open access platform, GeoIKP, to gather and share comprehensive knowledge about Nature-Based Solutions, and are now inviting people to share their experiences through its new “Citizen Stories”.

GeoIKP was developed through the OPERANDUM project, an EU-funded project implemented by 26 partners from all over the world, including UNESCO, who research Nature-Based Solutions to adapt rural and natural territories to the impacts of rising extreme weather events. The platform gives access to all of the results derived from the project, and to bring awareness and foster the co-creation of nature-based solutions (NBS) as a vehicle for transformational change. It serves as a hub for the growing NBS community to share information, tools, data, and experiences to reduce hydro-meteorological hazards, and address related societal challenges in rural and urban areas.

It caters to both advanced users with a professional interest as well as first-time visitors without any prior knowledge of nature-based solutions, offering rich and varied information for every type of stakeholder: scientific data for researchers, real examples of co-creation processes for media and associations, learning tools for citizens, best practices for policy makers and even a hub for finding partners and opportunities for business and investors.

The newly launched Citizen Stories of GeoIKP gives a voice to vulnerable, affected or concerned citizens to share personal experiences of how and why they started applying nature-based solutions to their areas, and to inspire others to take action. The citizen stories represent a growing knowledge repository for anyone interested or engaged in grassroots solutions to climate change.

Share your story!

Explore the citizen stories on the GeoIKP platform and learn how citizens are tackling environmental and social challenges. Are you affected by natural hazards such as floods, droughts, landslides, or heat waves? Are you involved in the co-creation of Nature-based Solutions to reduce these risks?

Share your story and become a part of the global NBS community!
