Japan: 590,000 take part in drills during 'National Disaster Prevention Day'

Drills took place all across the nation today to mark 'National Disaster Prevention Day' which envisioned earthquakes in the Tonankai and Nankai regions with epicenters ranging from the Kii Peninsula to Shikoku.

The number of participants in disaster drills across the nation during disaster prevention week from 30 Aug. until 5 Sept. 2008 will be about 1.89 million.

"Many local governments held their drills over the weekend of Aug. 30 and 31, so that many residents could participate," said a representative of the Cabinet Office.
